Tom's Games >  American football

American football, is a sport created in the United States which goal is for the teams to score points by reaching the end zone (equivalent to the try area in rugby) or kicking the ball between the goalposts.

American football comes from rugby and soccer. in the 1880s, Walter Camp, a coach at Yale University, amended the rules of both sports to create football.

A football game is played on a pitch of approximately 360 ft by 160 ft. A game lasts 60 minutes divided into four quarters of 15 minutes each. Each team has 11 players on the field. Depending on whether the team is offensive or defensive, players are not the same.

Just like rugby, football is a win-ground-game. The goal is to reach the goal area using passes and running. The player responsible for organizing the offensive part of the game is called the quaterback. He can either give the ball to running back who will seek to gain ground by running, or choose to make a pass to a receiver.

Football is a sport that is almost exclusively played within the United States. It is very important there, whether at professional or university level. Japan is one of the only countries to have a real football league. There are a few teams in Europe but the level is not very high. The NFL (American Championship) and especially the final, the Superbowl, is increasingly followed in other countries.
