Antiquity refers to the period following Prehistory, at a time when humans started to develop their writing skills.

According to historians' discoveries, the most ancient civilization is that of the Sumerian's in Mesopotamia. They seem to have evidence of the writing development which is said to be “cuneiform” since -3400. Historians agree on the fact that the beginnings of Antiquity cannot be clearly established: several dates are pointed out depending on the areas where writing made its first appearance.

In Europe, historians estimate that it appeared between -2700 and -1200 in Crete. As for the end of this civilization, of which, to most people, the fall of the Roman Empire represents its point of reference, it is set around 480 AD.

Antiquity has seen the development and expansion of great empires, let's take for example the Roman Empire. Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome still fascinate today many researchers and history lovers.

Despite those empires' greatness and power, Barbarian Invasions which have shaken Europe in the late Fifth Century have considerably weakened these civilizations, leading sometimes to their fall. Thus, after Antiquity and these Barbarian Invasions from all quarters, the first Kingdoms appeared during the Middle-Ages.

By the way, speaking of Barbarian Invasions, did you know that the word “vandal” stems from one of those barbarian people, the Vandals, who participated with the Huns in the Roman Empire pillage and invasion?
