An archeologist is a scientist in charge of the historical reconstitution from prehistory to modern era. Archeologists look for prints, ruins and other finds that are buried in the ground or that they may find in ancient sites' remains.

Thus, archeologists are led to dig grounds, comb ruins in order to find clues enabling them to know more about distant past times. Historical knowledge is so required for an archeologist as to be able to date the origins of finds. Yet, unlike historians, archeologists do not base their research on ancient texts.

Fossilized prehistorical animals' bones enable paleontologists to know more about the animal evolution during prehistorical times. Whereas archeologists are more likely to look after civilization remains that will indicate them how human cultures evolved. Writing being only 5000 years old, it is necessary to find material remains to understand cultures preceding that time, since no text can prove any sort of cultural way of life.

It is only during 19th century that archeology appeared in its scientific and historical form. Before, archaeological remains that were to be found were considered as treasures of a high commercial value. This idea to go after ancestral treasures has also been promoted by numerous movies such as the famous series of Indiana Jones.

Among the most beautiful archaeological finds, let's cite for instance the golden mask discovered in Toutânkhamon's grave in Egypt; or Lucy's skeleton: a fossil of a biped Australopithecus female dating from about 3,2 millions years! Even more impressive: Pompeii, a city founded during 6th century B.C (Roman Empire), which was completely buried under 60 feet of hash and pumice in AD 79 because of the volcanic eruption of the Mount Vesuvius... and remained forgotten for more than 1600 years until it was found almost intact underground, in 1748.
