Backpacking is the way of traveling that commonly refers to a low-cost trip, that is often made abroad and is longer than classical vacation. The use of local public transport and hitchhiking are also characteristic of backpacking.

Backpackers advocate a cultural trip that is meaningful for them. They wish to meet local people by living as close as they can from them and experience their way of life, becoming witnesses of a culture. They can stay as paying guests, or run youth hostels, but they avoid regular hotels and any form of mass-tourism.

New technologies now allow the backpackers to stay in contact with their friends and family. Some of them even create a blog to which they transfer digital pictures in the course of their journey. More and more youth go on a backpacking trip after having finished school and before university, as an initiatory journey that will provide them a great human experience and bring them a lot of maturity.

Hippies from the 60s and 70s made it popular and some people today are trying to remake the Hippie trail along Eastern countries; the most famous location being Kathmandu in Nepal.
