Betty Boop is a female cartoon character who first appeared in the animated productions of the Paramount Pictures. Despite from being very old ( her “screen” birth dates back to the early 1930's) she never took a wrinkle and has always remained a famous sex symbol.

Who said cartoons were for children? During the depression era, Betty's image was that of a poor working class girl, naïve and only half conscious of her jazzy beauty. She was therefore very successful among a grown-up audience, who experienced a big economic crisis.

Betty's outfit turns all men on: a mini dress, heart-shaped at chest level, black spike heel, transparent stockings, large earrings... Furthermore, the pretty locks surrounding her angel face and her sad look definitely played on the ambiguity of the character. The strong sexual content of her character was a perfect target for the Legion of Decency, a censorship body created in 1933 and aimed at clearing Hollywood from obscene productions.

She was made well-behaved to appear on cartoons for children, but her celebrity faltered and in 1939, the last episode of her adventures was released.
She made a guest appearances in Popeye's series, and in the movie Who framed Roger Rabbit, but her career ended up there: indeed, the motion pictures' world was seeing life in color, and poor Betty was still in black and white.

However, she remained very famous: Marylin Monroe quoted her tuned catchphrase “poopoopidoo whoo” for the president Kennedy's birthday, and many Pin Up small-sized statutes portraying Betty are sold each year.

The golden age seems to be not over for Miss Boop..
