Biathlon is a winter sport combining two disciplines, cross-country skiing and rifle shooting.
It is a sport coming from Scandinavian countries, where people have been skiing for millenniums, and where was created the very first ski club. In the beginning, it was above all a military discipline in so far as it was only practised by the military staff. After several evolutions, biathlon officially became a sport thanks to the International Olympic Committee in 1954, and became 4 years later an Olympic sport.

A biathlon competition is a race in which athletes have to complete a cross-country ski track, and contains target shooting sessions (in prone and standing position). Four different kind of races exist in biathlon : the individual, the sprint, the pursuit and the mass start. Each race has its own specificities concerning the distance to cross, the number of shooting sessions, and the order of the shoots. The best biathletes usually come from Norway, Germany, or Austria, countries where biathlon is a very famous sport.

In France, biathlon is not really expanded, but it is getting more and more famous due to the good performances realised by French athletes during Olympic Games. The most famous French biathlon athlete is Raphaël Poirée, 8 times world champion and 4 times world cup winner in the beginning of the years 2000.
