Tom's Games > Bmx
BMX is a bike competition and more generally an area of extreme cycling. BMX is the contraction of Bicycle Motocross.
Born in California during the 60's, this highly impressive sport close to moto cross, is characterized by the size and shape of the bike that is used. BMX bikes are smaller than ATV or racing bikes, they are not equipped with a derailleur and have a broad frame. Like in motocross, BMX riders'outfit comprises a helmet and a coverall protecting the entire body.
BMX is a discipline of speed, between 8 competitors on a runway strewn with bumps and curves up to 400 meters long. This competition requires speed, dexterity, precision, poise and balance. Falls are frequent and it is not uncommon to see a competitor colliding into another one's bike, or taking it with him in his fall.
In the course of the 80's, BMX has diversified to become a sport which combines tricks, jumps and records of all kinds.
Mat Hoffman, the best BMX champion in history, specializes in vert (halfpipe), is the 1st one to have achieved a 900° backflip with and without his hands on the handlebar with his bike. Other champions include Dave Mirra who won many titles at the X Games as well as several championships. These champions are the main characters of their own eponymous video games, just like Tony Hawk for skateboarding.
In 2008, BMX became an Olympic sport. The 1st champion in history is French rider Anne-Marie Chausson who has been even faster than men!
