Bobsleigh, or “Bobsled” is a winter sport, whose discipline is part of sledding events. A crew made of 2 or 4 men has to run down a narrow and twisted track made of ice on board of a sled. A sled, or “sleigh”, is a vehicle, shaped as a giant rocket to make it aerodynamic. The upper part of the engine is fixed on 2 parallel runners to slide on ice. And it is is only powered by gravity!

At the starting point, riders, positioned one behind the others, run a short distance while pushing the engine. Then, they jump on it. The running part is made to reach a good speed level with the sled. Once the sled is propelled on the track, riders, or “bobers” sit within. Their run down is called a “heat” in the official lexicon. There are at least one pilot and a brakeman in a team, plus 2 pushers in a 4 members team.

It was made up in Saint Moritz, Switzerland, at the turn of the XIXth century. The first Bobsleigh club appeared in 1897, and it became a competition sport in 1923, when the International Federation of Bobsleigh was created. The greatest speed records were all closed to 150km/h!

In 1990, a film was dedicated to this sport.. Based on the true story of a Jamaican team that competed for the 1988 Winter Olympic Games of Calgary, the film relies on the assumption that front-runners could challenge Bobsleigh champions on their territory, only because they would push the sled until reaching a superior speed!
