The couple notion has existed for millenniums.
By definition, a couple links two persons in an intimate relationship whether it may be between a man and a woman, two women, or two men.
Etymologically, the word belongs to the family of the Latin verb appere which means to attach.

For a very long time, until the 20th century, the couple notion was quite strict.
That is to say, at a certain age ( around twenty years old) young people had to seriously think about getting in a relationship so as to be able to get married in a church and raise a family. The notion of homosexuality was not well-accepted, and divorcing was considered as a true social failure.

Still, the couple has become a more general expression, referring to two characters who work/evolve together as a team, or build a career together : Laurel and hardy, Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill, David and Jonathan, etc.

Couple is also a mathematical, physical and mechanical term, commonly meaning duality and complementarity.
