Crocodiles are aquatic reptiles of the order of crocodilians. They represent the family of Crocodylidae and living in a large part of the Tropics, in Africa, Asia, South and North Americas and Australia. They tend to live in rivers and feed on a wide variety of living and dead animals like mammals and fishes. Some species like the saltwater crocodile in Australia and Pacific islands, sometimes venturing far enough in the sea.

Crocodiles hunt on the lookout and are relatively fast on short distances even out of the water: the average speed of crocodiles is about 3 km/h but they may reach 18 km/h during an attack. They have very powerful jaws and teeth adapted to cut the meat of their victims. They can?t open their mouth if it is held closed. Being cold-blooded animals, they can remain without eating something for long periods.

The biggest species of crocodiles can be very dangerous for humans. Saltwater and the Nile crocodiles are the most to be feared, killing hundreds of people every year in South-East Asia and Africa. The other species of crocodilian as the black caiman are also daunting for human beings.
