The US Dollar is the currency circulating in the US as well as in American colonies. Some countries, such as Zimbabwe also have the dollar as a currency. However, the only resemblance between the US and the Zimbabwean dollar is the name, for their values cannot be compared.

The word “dollar” appeared around the 17th century. During the 16th century, “Joachimsthaler” mine was the only silver resource out of which coins, called “Thaler” were made. Little by little, the name “thaler” was abandoned, and transformed into daalder, tolar or daler depending on the country. During the Spanish conquests between 1500 and 1800 in South America, the Spanish dollar became the standard currency in those countries.

During the American Revolution the Spanish dollar was also used. The origins of the $ symbol are disputed. Some believe it refers to the Strait of Gibraltar, symbolized by the two vertical bars (two bars cut the S originally). Others thinks it is a way of simplifying the acronym US, and there are another dozen of theories, but none has yet been confirmed.

The dollar is a famous currency worldwide, it has been used as a standard for a long time, even in eastern countries in which the dollar is not the national currency. In some countries, such as Romania for instance, prices displayed were in dollars (for cars and apartments), and people could pay in dollars directly!

However, since the Euro appeared in 1999, the dollar lost of its international power, and in the 2008 summer, one Euro was equivalent to $ 1.50! In other words, if you had 100 Euros, you could exchange them for 150 dollars!
