A donkey is an animal that forms a part of the equines. Hence, it looks like a horse, and may even mate with one. For instance, if a donkey mates with a mare, it will give birth to a mule.

Physically, donkeys' ears are longer that those of other equines; and their coat is often gray, but may be brown, black or white according to the country or region. Their under-belly, however, is white, as well as their muzzle and the outlines of their eyes. Donkeys are also smaller than horses and rarely reach 5' hands.

There are wild donkey species but most of them have been domesticated, this for more than 5000 years. Indeed, donkeys represent many advantages. They are known to be the “poor man's horse” since they don't need a lot of food. Moreover, donkeys are faithful mount for hikers since they are very careful, less nervous than horses and can carry heavy burdens. Many words have been made out of the word “ass” to signify one's stupidity or even more vulgar things. “Dumbass”, “jackass”, “asenine” or simply “donkey” or “ass” are common insults coming from our poor and nice donkeys' name.
