Dragon Quest is a series of video game (also known as the Dragon Warrior in the United States) created in 1986 by the designer Yuji Horii. The series is extremely popular in Japan and has sold over 47 million copies worldwide.

The first episode, created by the Japanese company Enix, was released in 1986, it was one of the very first role playing game (RPG) in the history of video games (with Ultima I in 1980 and Wizardry in 1981) and the first game of its kind in Japan. In this country the influence of the series on his successors was immense, and each role play that followed (including Final Fantasy or Megami Tensei) was inspired in large part by Dragon Quest.

Even now series continues to delight the fans, and each episode has reached the video game top selling rank in Japan. The game is so popular in Japan that, following the release of Dragon Quest III in 1988, the Japanese parliament asked the company Enix to release the new opus of Dragon Quest out of working hours to reduce absenteeism (both academic and professional).

Dragon Quest is such a phenomenon in Japan that there are concerts based on this universe, and many CD containing various OST of the games (some of whom benefited from the talent of the London Philharmonic Orchestra).

Dragon Quest has not been as successful in the rest of the world, because it was overshadowed by other series such as Final Fantasy, especially in recent years.
