A dream is an unconscious activity of our brain that appears when we are asleep, and might become conscious if we wake up suddenly for instance. Thus, we might remember some dreams we have made, but generally, we recall it when it has been traumatizing: death of a relative, fear, anguish might be reasons that awake us.

Hence, they got their inspiration from their dreams, and their work is deeply marked with fantasizing.

Some psychoanalysts, like the famous Freud, gave the dreams a rational explanation, even if an analysis is needed to decode them. According to Freud's theory, dreams would be the expression of our unconscious desires, that could be realized unconsciously in our dreams.
