Elephants are the biggest terrestrial animals. They live in hot countries, mainly in Africa and Asia. This animal weights several thousands of kilogrammes and may be up to 4/5 metres tall.
You'd better not to be in this animal's path which biggest known weighed 12 tons (26400 lbs), and lived in Angola in 1974.
This mammal is herbivorous and mainly lives in the savannah where it finds enough food to feed itself, because it can eat up to 200 kilos (440 lbs) of grass, plants, and even some kind of wood per day. As it lives in the savannah it goes alongside lions, tigers, and hippopotamuses.
Elephants are seriously hunted because of the ivory they get, which endangers their existence in so far as their number decreased from some millions in 1970, to several dozens of thousands nowadays. That is why, elephants belong to the protected species, hopping it will allow to put an end to this intensive hunting.
Otherwise, a lot of elephants live in captivity, often in zoos or circuses. Entertainments shows they appear in are among the most appreciated whereas they are quite easy to tame and domesticate.
A test realized with an elephant in front of a mirror reveals that elephants are among the only species that are able to understand it was its own reflect, like monkeys or men.
