Mount Everest is known as the highest peak in the world: it culminates at 29,029 ft. It is located in Asia, more precisely between China (Tibet), and Nepal, followed closely by the Himalayan K2 (28,251 ft).
Its name was given as an homage to the British colonel Sir George Everest.
The numerous climbings represent the main source of income notably for Nepal, thanks to the tourists coming to challenge the mountain.
By the end of the year 2008, there had been more than 14,000 mountaineers who tried it, out of whom 4,000 arrived at the peak. The mountain is also a cemetery of those who died and whose bodies could not be taken back down the valley. Some of them are visible from the climbing paths.
The first people who officially arrived at the peak were Edmund Hillary and Tensing Norgay. They reached it in 1953, some 3 years after Nepal opened its borders to allow mountaineers to take a more secure path.
210 people died while trying to climb Mount Everest, which reminds us of the difficulty and need to get prepared to face such conditions.
