Explorers are individuals who travel or search in a geographic area ( a country, a continent, the World!!) because they expect to discover tracks of an unknown people or a land offering a wealth of natural resources (oil, gold...). “Exploration” is a broad term that may also be used in a symbolic way to refer to the search, and the consequent discovery, of something that is not geographic. “Exploring one's body” means attempting to know more of one's sexuality; “exploring human nature” means trying to look for the characteristics of mankind.

Exploring is a typical human activity: we believe that some 8000 years ago, cavemen “made up” the first maps in painting caves' walls. Exploring a place and map-making was essential for them to master their environment. “Exploration” really peaked during “the age of discovery”, also known as “the age of exploration”. They suffered from dehydration and hunger, diseases spread like a wildfire, and the seas could lay them in their grave at any moment.

But his big mistake didn't change the fact that a “brand new world” had been discovered and was about to become a major land of opportunity.
