The word genius is a term encompassing several meanings.
In the roman mythology, everyone is supposed to have a Genius (or a Juno for women), a character that is both the personification of one's traits of intelligence and a sort of mind-opener who increases one's wit and spiritual sense. A Genius has no proper life: it is a sort of guardian spirit.
The definition of the word changed in the 18th century with a renewal in the literature. A genius was like a specific and almost magical essence that emanates sometimes from a place. The term was for instance used to express the concept that lies behind the poet's inspiration: a genius was an external source of inspiration, an element that triggered the poet's ability to get over-sensitive to things and that couldn't be grasped by the others.
This invisible force became a synonym for “unconsciousness” or inner “intelligence”. Nowadays, people who have a genius are either very clever or talented for something. We even say of some artists that they're geniuses, which means that everybody agrees on their talents, but no one can explain the reasons for this. Einstein was a genius, Picasso as well.
Nowadays, a Genius is also seen as a sort of short-term lucky charm. A Genius is something, or someone that you find on a stroke of luck. It is a character with super-powers, that could make you the king of the world without budging from an inch. No need to work, no need to be rich or witty if you have a genius. The movie “Aladdin”, a Walt Disney Studio production pictured the genius as a supernatural character living on a lamp from the ancient times. If you release the genius from his lamp, you will become his master as long as he still owes you something: indeed, a genius grants you 3 wishes. You can ask him anything you want and you'll get it. It's like a free take-away service of anything you like on earth.
