Gorillaz is a band whose members are fictional characters. This group was created at the initiative of Damon Albarn, former singer of Blur and The Good, the Bad and the Queen, and Jamie Hewlett (Tank Girl's cartoonist).

The group members are portrayed as cartoon characters, and Albarn and Hewlett created an entire universe around them. Gorillaz has four core members : 2D piano and vocals, Murdoc Nicalls bass, Noodle guitar and Russel Hobbs drums and percussion. Two other characters revolve around the group, a rapper Del a ghost who possesses the body of Russell for a time and Paula is 2D's former girlfriend and former guitarist of the band.

There is a very detailed and very complete story of how the group actually met, but it is too long to be told here. In reality, it's Damon Albarn himself, who provides vocals and keyboard. Miho Natori lends his voice to Noodle, Simon Tong plays guitar, Dan Nakamura embodies Dan The Automator, and Morgan Nicholls provides the bass parts if Jamie Hewlett cannot do it.

Gorillaz released two albums, the first in 2001 simply titled Gorillaz and the second in 2006 named Demon Days. Both were a big hit upon release. Since their first album, Gorillaz has received a wide variety of awards (over 40 of them) among which a Guinness Book of World Records as Most Successful Virtual Band (they sold over seven million copies of their eponymous album).
