The hospital is a place in which injured or sick people come so as to get a treatment, those people are referred to as patients. The word patient comes from the Latin “pati” which means “to suffer” and “to endure”.
Only during the 6th century and after the Corpus Juris Civilis was written (the antique Roman civil code) that the hospital becomes an institution. But until Renaissance, a hospital is not meant to cure people: it provides rather a spiritual help than a medical one. And even during the Renaissance, “patients” were homeless and poor people. The hospital was a shelter to all these men and women.


Today, the hospital is an institution of health care. Patients are provided a treatment, either remedial, or palliative (aiming at minimizing physical and psychological sufferings of a patient). Sometimes, if a patient has to spend a few days within the hospital, he is hospitalized. But that is not systematic.

Many TV series have been based upon the hospital universe: the first big success was that of ER in the 90's followed by the more recent series Grey's Anatomy.
