A hot dog is a food item composed of a hot cooked sausage placed in the middle of a sliced piece of bread (or « hot dog bun »). The bread is usually of the same length of the sausage, and even a bit shorter. Hot dogs are usually garnished with condiments like ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard, onions, sauerkraut...

Many people claim to know where and from whom hot dogs were invented. The first type of food similar to a hot dog date back to the 15th century in Vienna. The city of Frankfurt is also on the list of potential inventors.

The terminology “Hot Dog”is a long story: a typical race of German dogs nicknamed “sausages with legs” was imported worldwide in the 19th century. The nickname was given to mock the sausage-shaped body and the very short legs of dachshunds.
When Hot dogs began to sold to a great extent, people started to refer to the hot dog sausages as “dashshunds”, as a way to joke on the actual animals these sausages were made of: indeed, a joyful rumor (a urban legend) claimed that hot dog sausages were prepared with dog meat... From “dog sausages” to “hot dogs”, there was just a step to take.

In the late 19th century, hot dogs were prepared and sold in the US, first as a form of food allowing people to walk while eating a sausage without greasing their hands. People began to enter the business of hot dogs, which became the most favorite type of food eaten by sport supporters in stadiums.

The United States are THE place to eat a good Hot Dog. All over the towns, in Seattle, New York, Chicago...street vendors prepare succulent hot dogs in their carts. The smell of stale fat and the little umbrella indicates the way to have a quick bite to hungry pedestrians in a hurry.

Finally, and most surprisingly, hot dog eating contests are frequently organized. The world record for the highest number of hot dogs ate in 12 minutes was set in 2007 by Joey Chestnut. He gobbled up 66 hot dogs and his record hasn't been broken yet.
