Tom's Games > Igloo
An igloo is a type of housing made of snow or sometimes built with peat. The word is an Inuit term meaning « a house ». Igloos are very often shaped as a dome, and are meanly used by the Inuits, a people from North Canada.
Originally, they used to sleep in such housing to shelter from the bad weather and the nightfall when they went for hunting. Because of the low temperatures predominant in these areas, people found in ice a good protection against cold. It can be minus degree in an igloo, but compared to the outdoor temperature (-30...), it's almost like heaven. Furthermore, Igloo inhabitants usually wore animal skins and boiled whales fat to increase their body heat.
In order to breath, an inhabitant has to make some holes in the structure of the igloo. He can also leave the sunlight enter the room by using ice instead of snow at some parts of it
Ice or melting snow can also be used to solidify the rooftop.
Nowadays, igloos are still used in North America or in northerner places, but they are more frequently used for its entertaining potential. Indeed, snow, like modeling clay, is really good to build all sorts of imaginative things!
