In geography, an island refers to any land expense surrounded by water, whatever it may be, like a very little island in a lake, or the Caribbean islands in the Atlantic ocean.

Islands can be classified in different categories. Continental islands are spaces of land surrounded by the sea, but are nevertheless linked to a continent in so far as they have their roots in the same continental shelf. Actually, these islands completely make part of the continent, but the level of the sea only lets a small part visible, which gives the impression that the island is split from the continent. Volcanic islands are made by the rise of the magma coming from the earth's crust that gets colder on the surface, and then make an island.

Islands are often regarded as being little heavens lost in the middle of the sea. With the sand, the sun, the heavenly climate, they are the favourite destination of many tourists. They have often an amazing fauna and flora confirming the change of scene.
