A kayak is a floating hull with which we can go down rivers on a quiet high speed or go sea kayaking on a minimal craft which is nevertheless very secure. Kayaks are very easy to handle and even though it capsizes (you inside), it is quiet simple to turn over thanks to a special paddling technique.
Kayaks are little dinghies totally waterproof for they have a “skirt” into which we slip into and that weatherproofs totally the craft. Kayakers also wear a waterproof coat and a helmet to protect themselves against possible collisions, especially if you are riding rapids.
Formerly, kayaks were made out of floated wood and covered by sealskin to assure their complete waterproofness. The Inuits used to ride kayaks to hunt in Nordic regions. Nowadays, even if we keep on making kayaks out of wood for aesthetics, the others are made out of very light materials such as fibreglass or carbon fibre that assure also great resistance to shocks.
Kayak as a sport enable great sensations when going down rivers. If you are confident enough, you may even go down rapids and have a very exciting time! The best ones are usually attempting to break new records. In March, 2009, the Brazilian Pedro Olivia breaks the highest jump record. He thrust in a 127 feet fall into the Rio Sacre river at the Salto Belo falls, Brazil.
A new type of racing kayak has been invented: the Hydrofoil Kayak or Foilkayak. It enables very high speed (up to 28 knots) on calm waters and solo.
