A keep is an architectural element of a castle. It is easily recognizable in so far as it is the highest tower of the castle. Keep is also sometimes known as donjon which comes the Latin word dominus meaning master, dominant. So, according to the etymology, the keep is supposed to be reserved to the master.

The keep had different uses depending on the fact people were in peace or in war period. During peace periods, the keep was above all the place where the lord and his family lived. Lordly treasures were also hidden there, so were weapons and family archives.

During wars, a keep had several essential uses. Thanks to its height, it was used to observe the surroundings of the castle and study the moves of the enemies. Bowmen and shot machines could be placed in the keep so as to shoot on the assailants as well.

The keep was also a king of shelter. It was generally build in a way that made it independent from the rest of the castle, so people could take refuge in when the castle were no longer under control. Most of the time, the keep was connected to the exterior of the castle, by a tunnel for instance, and it was therefore possible to go in and out without passing through the castle.
