Tom's Games >  Lake

A lake is a vast stretch of water that is usually freshwater. Compared to ponds, lakes are a lot vaster and deeper. The lakes' source varies according to their location (glaciers, watercourses...) and their nature: natural or artificial. As to evacuate, the lakes' water either flows into the sea or evaporate naturally.

Lakes are very appreciated for all the nautical activities they allow. You may go sailing, kayaking, jet skiing, windsurfing, or fishing. Great beaches have even been created around lakes, as well as swimming areas, often watched.

Some lakes are so vast that they are called “seas”, like Caspian Sea, which is also a saltwater lake. In Siberia stretches the vastest stretch of freshwater of the world, which dwells on more than 12, 000 square miles and 5, 511 feet deep (without mentioning its 23, 000 feet deep of sediment)! There is as much water there than in the five American Great Lakes, that is to say 23, 600 km³!

Northern America, there are the Great Lakes that count 5 of them and provide a huge habitat for animals and plant life. Nevertheless, the latter are polluted by GMOs used in cultures next door, acid rains and polluted waters that flows in the lakes.

In 1913, a huge storm broke over the Great Lakes in a blizzard of hurricane-force winds. The “Big Blow” or “White Hurricane” devastated the entire region, killing more than 250 persons in 3 days and destroying around 40 importation ships. Winds broking at 90 mph lifted waves up to 35 feet high and brought whiteout snowsqualls.
