When speaking about a mission, the person is entrusted with it. At the very beginning of history, a mission referred to “holy” tasks. Most of the time, those missions were meant to spread Christianity over the world.
But the term has evolved very much and is now used by the army so as to define different sorts of tasks.

A diplomatic mission is completely different from religious and military missions: it refers to the gathering of several diplomats. At their head there is the ambassador.

In the military field, a mission refers to some action, that has to be done properly and which necessitates a very long preparation so as to complete it. Such an operation may be the equivalent of an expedition. Men are sent in order to accomplish the missions, which can be of different kinds. Indeed, missions may be called rescue, reconnaissance, search, bombing, and support missions.
Depending on the need and orders of the headquarters, soldiers accomplish those missions.

A rescue mission is meant to go and search for someone who has been kidnapped or who is in great danger (sinking of a boat for instance). A bombing mission is meant to destroy some strategic buildings and places. Reconnaissance missions refer to missions where people are sent to analyze the place, people and equipment, and to think about the best way to accomplish the mission that follows. It is a sort of checkout (spying) of all elements that might interfere or intervene during the following operation (be it rescue, support, etc.).

Space missions are also another kind of missions, aiming at discovering and analyzing planets, stars and space. Some of them are also meant to backup military missions. Have you heard about Corona?
