Multiplayer games are, as mentioned by the name, designed to be played with several other players. The number of players can vary from two, to hundreds of players, which gives a convivial aspect to the games.

Multiplayer games can be played online via the Internet, or offline thanks to the use of several gamepads. Multiplayer games destined to be played offline are usually more convivial and easy. The purpose is to allow the players to entertain quickly without being necessary to get 100% involved in the game. Games such as Micro Machines V3, Super Smash Bros Melee or Mario Party are typical multiplayer games in so far as they are so much fun when played by several friends, but are not that interesting when they are played solo. Such games are massively published on Wii.

The other category is the category of online multiplayer games. These games are a little bit less convivial since every player is sat down alone in front of his PC, even though dozens of players are playing in the same game at the same time. Nevertheless, these games are the most famous games on PC following the example of Counter Strike, Age of Empires or World of Warcraft (WOW). Moreover, we can mention the massively multiplayer online games (MMO) that are divided into three sub categories and can be played by hundreds of players at a time : MMORPG (for massively multiplayer online role playing games) ; MMORTS (real time strategy games) ; and MMOFPS (first person shooter).

However, some games such as WOW went past the mere state of video game, and became a real life style for some people who stay online for hours so that they can keep on improving the level of their characters, and neglect their real life. In the most serious cases, people have already died in Asia because they had been playing for several days in a row without any rest pause to eat and sleep.
