Music is a fantastic invention dating from the earliest percussion instruments made by men hundreds of thousands years ago. Rhythm is the basis of music, it gives music its tempo. Later, we invented a specific language and symbols to write music down with notes, musical staffs, flat, quarter notes among other technical terms of the musical jargon. Let us note that some great musicians have never known how to write or read music, in that case, we talk of self-educated musicians.

We are also surrounded by “natural” music. The birds' or whales' song, the shrilling of cicadas or the soothing sound of the ocean... are as much sound melodies. Yet, music is also a means of self-expression, an art. Music enables the one who composes it to express all his feelings, but music also provokes these feelings in the listener's mind.

Besides, cinema makes the most of music by using it as a leitmotiv to create in the filmgoers' mind anguish, fear or convey romanticism, happiness or love feelings. Without their soundtracks, almost any movie would lose its effectiveness. In the movie called “The Others”, director and composer Alejandro Amenábar uses music as to let anguish and terror reach everyone in the audience without resorting to special effects, though they are almost inherent to the genre (horror).

Imagine a video game without music... would the sound effects be enough to create an atmosphere? Certainly not. Adventure games, for instance, are generally very well led thanks to an effective score.

Therefore, music is everywhere around us, in nature as on the screens, in our iPod as in the bars, at home as in the stores. And even if we affectionate some music genres more than some others, music is for everyone a source of relaxation and irreplaceable pleasure.
