A musician is, in essence, someone playing or composing music. There are various types of musicians. Those using an instrument such as a violin are called instrumentalists, those using their vocal cords are called singers, those writing the music (composing it) are called composers, and those conducting an orchestra are called conductors.

There is also a distinction between an amateur musician and a professional musician. The amateur is not paid whereas a professional gets a salary or fees for his/her performance.
Some of the most famous classical musicians are Mozart, Beethoven, Bach. Most of those musicians are instrumentalists, composers and conductors.

Concerning today's music, most of musicians on stage do not compose the music themselves. They “simply” perform in front of a huge audience. Some bands however insist on composing and writing their songs and pieces by themselves.
