A ninja or shinobi is a spy-warrior from medieval Japan. The ninja are known for their stealth and their discretion. These masters of espionage were used at the time of medieval Japan to enter castles or military camps at night where they set fire to facilitate the arrival of troops. These ninjas were not subjected to any code of honor and therefore acted as mercenaries. This behavior makes them outcasts feared by people. Indeed, they were called 'Hinin "or non-human because of the crime they committed (murder, theft, ...) and they were therefore considered as scum of the earth.

Nowadays we tend to confuse samurai and ninja, while the two are diametrically opposed. The first one is answering to a lord, while the others receives orders from those who hire them. In the imagination of westerners and even Japanese, image widely picked up and spread by the movies or comics, ninja as warriors dressed with black hoods covering their faces, performing feats of physical combat, acrobatics and experts in the art of concealment, poisoning, especially diversion. Their main assets is their stealth and discretion.
