The Olympic sports include all the sports contested in the Summer and Winter Olympic Games. Two types of Olympic sports can be distinguished depending on the fact they are scheduled for the Summer or Winter Olympic Games. Each sport is generally divided into several categories, that are not necessarily all scheduled for the Olympic games.

Nowadays, the Olympic Games include 35 sports, 53 disciplines, and almost 400 events. 28 of these sports (and 38 disciplines) are practiced during the Summer Olympics, whereas only 7 sports ( 15 disciplines) are scheduled for the Winter Olympics.

To get scheduled in the Olympics, a sport must be practiced by a large number of people. The criteria is quite strict, an Olympic sport must compulsorily be practiced by men in at least 50 countries in 3 continents, and by women in 35 countries in 3 continents.

Some sports disappear, and others appear along the different Olympic Games. For instance, tennis was canceled, and incorporated again to the Olympic Games some years later.
Some sports are sometimes presented as demo sports, so as to test their popularity, and may eventually get incorporated to the Olympic Games for good.
