United States presidential election is the election in which the voters choose the electors of the US Electoral College, who will directly elect both President and Vice President.

Here is the process of the presidential elections :

From September to January, the potential candidates in each party officially start running for office.

Then the primary elections are held from February to June. These are test elections in each party for the future candidates. These elections are held in 35 States.

Then comes the Super Tuesday which is the first Tuesday in February or in March when the biggest number of States choose the candidates of each party who will indeed be eligible for office.

In July and August there is the presidential nominating convention, which is a political convention held by the major political parties. The goal of this convention is to select the party's nominee for President.

The electoral campaign is held from September to November. It really starts on the first Monday of September, during the Labor Day.

In November (on the Tuesday following the first Monday of the month) is held the Election Day : the American citizens choose their future President. But it is an indirect election, so the citizens vote for the electors. Then the electors will gather in every single State (in December) so as to officially elect the new President and Vice President of the United States. The ballots are counted up and sent to Washington DC. So as to be elected, a candidate must obtain the absolute majority : 538/2 +1 = 270.

Eventually, the President of the United States is officially elected even though his name is already known since November.
