Rock and roll is a musical genre born from the combination of rhythm and blues, a black musical style with country music. “Rock and roll” became a real lifestyle, with a cultural impact spreading in all spheres, from movies to comics as well as clothing fashions.
From the mid 1960's,the consumption of psychotropics ( Acid in particular) in intellectual groups becomes a common practice.
The 60's are therefore a landmark in the history of artistic creations performed by musicians under the influence of drugs. In the United States, the Grateful Dead start the Acid Rock movement. At the same time, the first Pink Floyd's gigs and the Beatles' album Revolver start the wave of psychedelic rock in the United Kingdom. But the audience will only measure the new influence of rock music in 1967 with the Beatles album Sgt Pepper Lonely Heart Club Band.

The roots of the punk music date back to the 60's. This musical movement is first influenced by the garage rock (the Stooges and MC5) and a bit later by he New York scene of the 70's “starring” the New York Dolls and the Ramones, whose first 1976 album is said to be the first punk album of the CBGB scene.
From the late 70's, rock musicians take advantage of much-improved studios. they emphasis on lyrical content and try experimental rock. The Wire, Devo.. are artists who pay great importance to recording phases, drifting away from the “brutal” punk.
Many rock “sub-genres” appeared at the same time: Hard Rock (Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Kiss, Alice Cooper, AC/DC et Motörhead) and heavy metal.(“Heavy metal” was coined by a journalist who wrote about Jimi Hendrix's Purple Haze).
By the end of the 70's, the genre takes a radical turn. Solo guitarists and drummers are praised, oppressive and satanic atmosphere (spurred by Black Sabbath) reign on the rock music.
Nowadays, hard rock turn to the dark side of the “metal”. The lyrics are tougher, the beat accelerates, and the sound is so saturated you could almost become deaf by listening at them.
The main stream however becomes more quiet and tends to verge on Pop. Dire Straits and Morrissey (the Smiths) are in a way the wise men of rock and roll, who attempt on being politically involved like REM or U2.
