Rome is the capital of Italy and is located at the central-wester portion of the Italian peninsula, on the Tiber river, 13,5 miles away from the Tyrrhenian sea. The territory of the city is composed by seven hills, the Capitoline, the Palatine, the Aventine, the Caelian, the Esquiline, the Viminal and the Quirinal Hill.

The legend says that Rome was founded by two brothers Remus and Romulus, on the territory they grew up, raised by a she-wolf. Besides she-wolf is one of the symbol of the city.

During the Empire period, Rome used to be the most important city of the Western Europe. It was the place were the emperor had its headquarters, the center of the world. With the apparition of Christianity, Rome has become the religious center of Christendom. As a matter of fact, the pope lives in the Italian capital. Vatican is an enclave in the heart of the city and includes the St. Peter's Basilica and some other buildings.

In addition to the St. Peter's basilica, there are many monuments in Rome due to the fact that the city is very ancient. One of the most famous monument is the Colosseum. Rome is a a city that entices a lot of tourists, as a matter of fact, it is the second city receiving the most tourists in the world after Paris, with 12 millions tourists.

Today, Rome has a little bit less than 3 millions residents and is the most crowded city in Italy.
