A skateboard is a four wheeled platform used as a way of locomotion, or most of the time as a hobby such as roller skates. It is composed with a deck (the wooden board), two metallic trucks connecting the wheels to the deck, and the wheels. Skateboarding practiced as a hobby, is practiced in places called skateparks where skateboarders gather so as to realize various tricks with their boards. Skateboarding is almost exclusively practice in urban areas, using ramps, handrails, sidewalks etc...

A very large amount of tricks can be realized in skateboard. Nevertheless they are grouped in four categories : flips, slides/grinds, grabs, and manuals. Flips are tricks done while jumping, the skater gives an impulsion to the board to make it spin in the direction he wishes, and then lands the trick on the ground. A slide, or grind, is the fact of using the deck or the trucks to slide on a handrail or whatever else. A grab is a trick consisting in catching the board with the hand while jumping. And eventually, manuals are tricks requiring a lot of balance, consisting in moving without using the four wheels ( rolling on two wheels, standing up on the side of the board and keeping the balance...)

Skateboarding is considered by many people as a genuine sport, at the same level as snowboard for instance, and there are several international contests such as the X-Games, the Gravity Games etc... confronting the style and technique of the skaters.
