Tom's Games >  Sportsmanship

Sportsmanship is conformance to the rules, it refers to a good spirit, a good behavior, at first during the game, and then in any circumstance.

This word is mainly used in sports and includes various aspects. An athlete who acts with sportsmanship is an athlete who respects the rules, the opponent, the spectators, who accepts the decisions of the referee without protesting, who doesn't undermine the game spirit, and who keeps his dignity when loosing or winning.

An example of good sportsmanship in soccer is the fact of putting the ball out of the field on purpose, and interrupting the action of one's own team, so as to allow the doctors to get in the field and heal a player of the opposite team who got injured. The simple fact of shaking the hand of one's opponent after the end of a game, even after a defeat, is also a good attitude.

If sportsmanship is naturally present in some sports such as tennis or martial arts for instance, it is much scarcer in some team sports like soccer or ice hockey in which the result may overwhelm the good spirit of the game. Indeed, it is common to see soccer players diving on the ground after a very light contact, pretending to get hurt in order to obtain a free-kick etc...
