Tom's Games >  Street luge

Street luge, also known as land luge or road luge, is a sport consisting in riding a street-luge board down a slope road as fast as possible. When practicing street luge, athletes can reach incredible speeds up to 75 MPH !

A street luge is a kind of downhill skateboard. The board is roughly 6,56 feet long, it has a head rest, two handles and toe clips. So it is rather comfortable for a device of this size. It may be made of iron, steel, aluminum or wood.

Street luge was born at the end of the 70's in California when skiers wanted to practice downhill activities when there were no snow. Then, the sport spread all over the world, in countries such as Canada, Germany, Austria, Sweden, France, Switzerland, Australia, South Africa and the U.K.

This sport was even integrated into the ESPN X Games and into the Gravity games, which are some major urban sports events.

However, it may be a very dangerous sport, and it already caused death. That is why, it is highly recommended to wear at least protections for the elbows, knee pads, and a motorbike helmet. The ideal protection is a leather motorbike suit covering all the parts of the body for a better safety.
