Television is a telecommunication medium which, after almost a century of development, was commercialized around the 1930's. The first countries to benefit from the new telecommunication medium were the United-States, the United-Kingdom, France, Russia, Germany, Italy, and Japan. In some African and Asian countries, however, television was commercialized only from the 1990's.

There has been a huge development in the television area. Hundreds of channels are now broadcasting TV series, movies, news, and many other kinds of programs. Television also largely contributed to the development of commercials, and little by little, replaced radio sets.

However, the two communication media are now both very popular, and each has its own positive and negative aspects. After World War II, TV programs developed and speakers and announcers became more and more popular, just like movie stars.

Today, in developed countries, there are more TV sets than people ! But in African areas, television is still not affordable to many people. For instance, in central Africa, there are less than 50 TV sets per 1,000 inhabitants. On the contrary, when analyzing developed countries' statistics, there are more than 1,000 TV sets per 1,000 people.

Today, people spend around 3 hours and a half watching TV, and the result is even more astonishing when adding up all hours watching any kind of screen (TV, computers, mobile phones). People watch screens more than 8 hours a day! So, don't forget to go out for a walk once in a while!
