Tom's Games >  Train

The train is one of the most used mode of transport for travels from suburbs to big cities and inversely. Its story begun in Scotland in 1804, with a steam engine. This system was successful, notably in the USA to connect the West to the East, or in Russia (Trans-Siberian Railway) for instance.

Nowadays, the system got modernized but the concept remains the same , a locomotive on two parallel rails tows wagons full of passengers or goods. Electricity replaced coal, the locomotive is fed by the very high tension cables and the speed has drastically increased. As a matter of fact, speed records of high-speed rails are held by French and Japanese trains with tests run speed records of 574 and 581 km/h (360 and 363MPH). But the conventional speed in use is between 200 and 300 km/h (125/190 MPH) for most of the countries.

The competition with the others means of transport is harsh and the construction of other large lines is a decisive step for the durability of trains. In the majority of countries, the railroad system works on two levels. There are the suburban trains (slower because there are more stops) that allow to make shorter runs during the day (home to office and office to home), and they are not that expensive, because they are made for daily use.
On the other hand there are the high-speed rails that connect big train stops on larger distances, and are occasional means of transportation that is why they are more expansive. However, they keep being more affordable than planes, even though the length is not the same.

Nowadays the train is one of the most environment-friendly, and one of the fastest and safest mode of transport.
