The United States is a nation located in the North of the American continent, and a “patchwork” of 50 states.
From the early 20's century, a landmark in the history of the US, the nation is known as the world's biggest superpower.

The history of the US is a short, and yet a long one: to sum it up, the big lines were the 1776 declaration of independence, the birth of the nation as the first democracy, the end of slavery in 1865 (after the Civil War), the birth of the Hollywood studios, the great Depression in 1929, D-Day: the landing of the US soldiers in France to fight against fascism and Nazism, the red hunt, the Cold War (an ideological battle between the US and the ex-USSR), the assassination of the president Kennedy in 1962, that of Martin Luther King in 1968, the Vietnam War, the civil rights movement, the Hippies, the landing on the moon in 1969 and the many wars that happened since the Vietnam war ( in Irak, in Afghanistan...)

the 60's were probably the most interesting period in the American history: whereas the American were threatening to throw nuclear missiles at the Eastern Block, a civil right movement, spurred by the black population, started to spread in all spheres of the American social classes.
People, and mostly young people, protested against the military intervention of the American troops in Vietnam, and demonstrated for their rights. It was a time of total freedom for the hippies who started to reject the consumption-based system.
Bob Dylan was singing “for the times they are a changing”, Janis Joplin was crying, Jimi Hendrix was doing crazy solos with his guitar and people were living on love, drugs and music.

The US is a fertile ground for many myths of success. The conquest of the Wild West fostered the idea that the North of America is an endless land of opportunities.
The American have always believed that one could climb the ladder of success through hard work. This is the American dream: that of the self-made-man who starts from nothing and become successful, like Rockefeller who found a dime and started to make a fortune.

Nowadays, the US is still a wonder place for many people. San Francisco stands for the Gay rights birthplace, New York for the light city and Barack Obama, the first Black president of the USA, was elected.
