Volley ball is an indoor team sport opposing two teams of 6 players each (unlike beach volley where variations are possible). Both teams are on each side of a net and the aim is to score points by grounding the ball on the other team's side. Players cannot touch the ball twice in a row and each team is not allowed to touch the ball more than 3 times per exchange (meaning they have to throw the ball on the other side of the net before they can touch the ball again).

Players change position each time the serve is lost, so that each player get to play in every position on the court (though they are more or less specialized in an area of the game: attack, pass, block...).You need 3 sets of 15 points each to win a game (several rules amendments were made in 1999 and 2000, regarding the scoring system: rally point system).

Beach volley is often considered to be indoor volley on the beach, although various differences prevail: number of players, game strategy, movement of the court...Even though more often than not
it is considered to be a “holiday sport”, beach volley is very technical and requires a good physical condition in order to be able to move swiftly in the sand.

Volley ball is an official Olympic game since 1964 and Beach volley since 1996 for both men and women. United States rank 1st on the number of gold medals (8 out of a total 14), while Brazil records of total number of 16 (among which 5 gold medals). There are also a World Championship along with many other competitions.

The longest volley ball game ever played took place in the US at the first Assembly Of God Church
in Lexington, Kentucky, it lasted 55 hr 3 min, from 30 July to August 1, 2007.
