Tom's Games >  White house

The White House is the official residence of the United-States President. It is also his workplace, and in addition, this is the place where the President welcomes his foreign counterparts.

Its construction started in the end of the 18th century following the impetus of the first President of the United-States, George Washington. He never lived in there since the work was only finished at the beginning of the 19th century and the first president who moved in was John Adams, second president of the United-States, in 1800.
It was built based on the project of an Irish architect, James Hoban.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the White House almost got destroyed. In 1814, during the war of 1812, the British army set fire to the building (and to all public buildings). The interior almost entirely burnt, the facades were partially destroyed.

Its reconstruction almost started immediately. Then, between 1817 and 1948, a series of changes contributed to the present aspect of the building. Creation of the West wing by Theodore Roosevelt (it is under his presidency that the White House got this nickname), change of the oval office by Franklin Roosevelt, and so on.
Even though all presidents successively brought personal changes to the building, the White House kept the very same aspect from the outside.

Symbol of the US presidency, the White House is indivisible from its resident. The White House is also the only residence of a head of state that can be visited for free.

There are no less than 135 rooms and 35 bathrooms in the White House. No need to talk about the tennis court, the swimming pool, the movie theater and the bowling alley.
