Witches are people who put a curse on people they hate or betrayed them. The word witch appeared for the first time in 589, and first referred to a small farmer. A few years later, witches became the privileged victim of superstition.

Women were considered as witches when they were fond of witchcraft. Witches are shaman women, and proclaim being the eldest religion in the world. Around the middle of the 15th century, women were burnt on the stakes. They were said to be the Devil\'s wives, to attend Sabbaths (meeting of people who practised witchcraft, Satanism etc...), they were said to put curses on people, spread diseases and death. During two centuries thousands of supposed witches were hunted, tortured, and burnt. It was only at the end of the 17th century that the stakes started being stopped little by little.

Witches of nowadays invoke the spirits so as to drive away daily demons, and practice magic to struggle against diseases and personal troubles. Contrary to the black magic they used to be taxed with, nowadays witches are kinds of better life counsellors.

In fairy stories, witches are very often described as very old nasty and ugly women, with a long and hook nose, sometimes with a greenish skin, who are able to fly on their brooms, and may eat children.
