EA faffs about with crappy digital distribution system v2.0

So, EA has released a new version of its digital distribution system. Fearing spyware I had it downloaded to a random TG office machine that'll probably be taken apart and rebuilt in a week and, after playing around with the service for ten minutes, I already think of it exclusively as a poor mans S

team

.

The comparisons in terms of attempted functionality are pretty obvious - the ability to buy games (obviously) and download promotional materials like demos, and even the user interface are not dissimilar. The contrast between usability and lack thereof is also quite stark - the EA system is like Internet Explorer dressed up; and thanks to a lot of users downloading and trying it out today it's as slow as your granny after being run over by an SUV.

The world of digital distribution truly belongs to the small and dynamic companies like Paradox and Valve. They have set up halfway visionary systems which work and which, quite critically, provide value for money. Why would I want to pay $50 for a digital copy of Battlefield 2142 when I can get a hard copy for the same money which will take me half the time to actually get when downloads are factored in; and God only knows how reliable the EA system will be at tracking my purchases and ensuring that I still technically own my copy of BF2142 tomorrow?

While all this is going on I can buy cheaper copies of mainstream and independent (Read: interesting) games on the likes of Gamer's Gate and S

team

. Big publishers have been so stupid and slow witted where digital distribution is concerned that Activision has signed on with Valve to sell its games via S

team

. EA is still faffing around with its own silly system, and the world is no better a place for it. It's sort of ironic in the fashion that many technology magazines are being killed by the internet, video game publishers have failed to capitalise on new technologies. The world's a stupid place...

Copy protection blows ass. Even when I buy games I ALWAYS download the
pirated/cracked version so I don't hav eto put up with stupid CD checks and
online registration. I'm going to stop playing PC games if companies this crap
up. Why can't PC games play like XBOX games? Just pop the DVD in and Play...no
installing or anything like that. If XBOX can do that, then why can't the PC? If
it's so hard then at least make it as easy as copying the files over and press
run....no need to install!!!

Why can't you just pop in a DVD and play the game on your computer? There are
hacks, you knkow. I have seen and XBOX hack where it's very easy to just load
the game onto your hard drive, so you never have to put in a new disk. My point
is, even if they did make PC games to work like XBOX games, somebody would find
a way around it eventually. So we would be back where we started.

So then why bother trying? Installing a game on your computer is now like
kissing your system goodbye. After every game I have to re-ghost my system back
to it's state before the game to keep it running great. These games are so
massive they seriously tamper with your system. We need a revolution!

EA has alot of things wrong and this is just another example. I have been a big
fan of the battlefield series but they royally screwed every fan who paid for
BF2 by providing nothing but crap for over a year. This distribution system will
most likely stick around and as each update of the system is released it will
get crappier and crappier.

Well its not just what you two have mentioned but for the simple fact that
they're getting more and more intrusive! IN GAME ADS!? WTF?! And why in God's
name does EA Downloader have to load when I try to load up Battlefield 2142?! I
DONT WANT TO DOWNLOAD SOMETHING I JUST WANT TO PLAY! Don't load up crap I don't
need and use up even more system resources. What ever happened to making a game
that was simply that, a game? I am getting tired of the money hungry companies
like EA who mass produce games with bugs and errors and just ignore the quality
aspect of it..

Man, i wish theyd roll bf2 back to how it was b4... back when we could toss c4
as far as nades. i dont F+++ing care if you can have ppl that jump n shoot, i
just want to throw my c4. And ne ways, it is not buggy at all (at least as not
much so as yall say) i h8 EA and everything they stand for, but BF2, BFV and
BF1942 are good games. As far as the downloader, yeh, its crap. It makes me sad
and thats why the only tigs i bought off that were the boosters. Im just gonna
DL bf2142 off bit torrent.

To the top poster, the reason we install games on the PC is because it is a lot
faster reading from a Hard Disk than a normal DVD Disc. And the comment you said
about just being able to copy the game to the pc and it works, that IS
'basically' all an installer does... The reason PC games are copy protected is
that is a lot easier to pirate a PC game since all you need is a NOCD fix or
Fixed IMAGE, but with your XboX/Ps2 etc you need a mod chip installed which is
quite a difficult task to do if you're not technically minded.I take the same
opinion about the protection though as it's bloody annoying and NOCD cracks are
the easiest way to play your game without buggering the original disc, thank god
that starforce has been shunned by many companies as it ruined some peeps pcs.

use a USB Dongle. Write protect the dongle and yes it would be annoying to
switch dongles everytime you play a different game, but it sure as hell would
stop pirating in a heart beat. The more profits made from the sales could
easily cover the 4mb flash drive needed for the dongle. problem solved... dont
like the idea? then you shouldn't have stolen games over the years because the
only person you have to blame for these idea's is yourself.

There has been hard locks for ages and they haven't succeeded aswell. If someone
wants to get a pirate software, he will. It's not the tons of protection that
won't stop him (maybe the lazy ones). What companies have to do is start
charging reasonable prices and creating quality content for their software/games,
then we'll see pirating diminish.

Dongles don't stop anyone. The program's check for it is cracked as easily as
any serial check.

How sad is it that we are now fearful of installing a game? EA has done a lot to
marginalize the users, and Battlefield 2142, the new downloader and NFS Carbon
are right on track.Have you seen how much add space there is in BF2142? But back
on topic, the EA downloader is still rather cluncky, and I wouldn't trust it to
download me BF2142, I trusted it with Euroforce, and I could only use it with
one account, but I have two that used. In the end I didn't bother with the thing.
Useless, that's what it is. At least Steam is useful.
