There's a new HD trailer for "Transformers" up on Yahoo, and this one shows much more action than the teaser did. There is a contingent of people out there who are seriously hating this movie already, and I just don't understand it. I understand if you just don't like this kind of silly action-movie premise, but a lot of guys my age who played with these toys as kids hate this movie (ignoring the fact that they have yet to see it). First off, there are the Michael Bay haters. OK, so not all of his movies are very good, but the man knows how to photograph cars, chases, and explosions. If you're making a movie about cars and jets that transform into giant robots and then blow stuff up, this is the guy to do it. You're almost guaranteed that the story will suffer because there is too much action if Bay's directing. That's exactly what I want. The old cartoons always sucked whenever the humans showed up anyway, so if the movie is nothing but giant robots fighting and transforming with no story at all, that will be great. Remember, this is a movie based on a LINE OF TOYS. You can't expect an R rating, high drama, and compelling dialogue. What you can expect is a lot of shooting but not many bullets hitting anyone (like the G.I. Joe cartoons). Just because we've all grown up to adults doesn't mean "Transformers" has to pass as adult entertainment now.
Then you've got the guys who whine about Optimus Prime having flames and being a different style truck than the original. Guys, listen to yourselves. Count yourselves blessed that someone is making a big budget, live-action Transformers movie at all, let alone using some of the same characters from the show (and Peter Cullen's voice!). You're complaining about painted flames and the semantics of a cab-over design? I won't even get into the Megatron stuff.
I hope the 10-year-old boy inside is kicking the shins of the crotchety-old man controlling these guys. Personally, I can't wait for this movie. Maybe it's because the 10-year-old boy inside of me is the one with the career and the crotchety-old man is the one who got laid off. The Boy gets to decide what we like. There's still a chance it could all go horribly wrong, but I really like what I see so far. I grabbed some hi-res stills from the trailer so click the thumbnails (and the pic above) to get those.

This movie will suck ass cause 1. hollywood is well known 4 destroying sumthing great by making a over the top, look at me movie. 2. they changed sum of the robots designs.. SIN!! the originals should have been used n the movie will suffer in the long haul over time espically due just to this alone.. 3. They mentioned that they have tried to direct this towards the newer crowd of transformers.. Pft... alot of whom love the touch me,look at me movies which is sumfin trasnformers have never been about... A chevy camaro. Oh please.. grow up...

Going to be an absolutely awesome movie, Andy you are a tool!!! Both me and my son cannot wait for this fantastic visual spectacle based on something that I loved when I was a son. What a treat to get it turned into such a big budget movie, rather than the completely accurate C grade straight to video crap that Andy is after.

Please clean up your English before complaining about anything someone else does. I know, I know, grammar police. Right. If you want someone to take anything you say seriously, you have to prove you have the mental capacity to form an opinion.

I have been a fan of the original Transformers since it's inception and it still holds a spot for me. But I am not going to see this movie.
The writer of this article may sit on his lofty throne and look down on guys like me with disdain... but here is the deal....
I want to see the original robot desigs.. that's what folks like me fell in love with, those are the images we had attachments to. This is a movie based on a cartoon, we already have suspension of belief. There is no need to make the robots look like 'realistic' robots. I am not looking for an R rating or anything, but I want to see the robots that are the Transformers, not the product of some egostistical director.
I don't mind the changes in Optimus as much as the horrendous monstrosity that is now Megatron. Megatron was the bad ass because of the fusion cannon on his arm. That design, that image was unique.
I will happily keep on watching the animated movie from the 80's. At least they didnt screw that up. Once more Hollywood takes something treasured and turns it into a joke.

people whine about how the designs have change, they dont look that good...blah blah blah and all that vaginitis. They tested on how the original designs would look on CG and it sucked to the point that it was too damn painful and stupid to watch.

now if you think THAT version of Prime is a lot better, then you must have sniffed a lot of glue. just my 2 cents.

We are complaining about the movie not being like the cartoon, because:
1. You see a cartoon, and forms an element of your childhood.
2. As you grow up, you have fond memories of the cartoon and its childishness, but (if you're a fanboy) you re-imagine it in a more credible, grown-up way.
3. When you do this, you invariably try to keep everything as "authentic" to the childish cartoon as possible. And taking all "authenticity" information from the toy line as well. But update everything that made the original cartoon childish.
So, us fans really, *really*, REALLY were pining to see Optimus Prime in high definition CGI as a *red* Peterbilt 352 truck cab with a horizontal reflective white stripe and 84377 number plates. It would have been so awesome to see Prime that way, mixing it in with live action humans and locations.
And we *would* expect the producers to update things like the level of dialogue, the pace and nature of the plot, and the presentation of the story and action. It's just a sadly missed opportunity when you "re-invent" something so much that you just make a whole new story over the top of a "copied" core idea.
I will go to see this at the theatre. I will enjoy it for what it is. But I will keep dreaming of the way I would have had it done. Us fans are youngish adults now; I think when we get to retirement and have a lot of time on our hands, many of us will take our hands to personal creativity. And with even better home computer tech in 35 years, we may see some real gems coming out of the fanfic sphere then (albeit, still swamped by low quality stuff).

Kryojenix:

>>1. You see a cartoon, and forms an element of your childhood.
I know exactly what you mean and feel. And you forgot to mention about the "magic" we all felt back then.
>>2. As you grow up, you have fond memories of the cartoon and its childishness, but (if you're a fanboy) you re-imagine it in a more credible, grown-up way.
Idk about fansboyism...never was with anything, but there's nothing fanboyish about re-imagining things with a bit more credibility to fit and go with the times. Take Spider-man for example....at the time when the comic was created, he was bitten with a radioactive spider. These days everybody knows that a spider can't be radioactive because the only thing that can survive such is a cockroach so that's probably the reason why they changed it to a genetically modded spider just to give it more credibility. It's an eyebrow raising change but it turned out okay. I think the same is happening here.
>>3. When you do this, you invariably try to keep everything as "authentic" to the childish cartoon as possible. And taking all "authenticity" information from the toy line as well. But update everything that made the original cartoon childish.

I know what you mean, being a kid in the 80's myself. I do feel that Prime and the others have a bit of Bionicleish look to them but the CGed cartoon look just doesnt translate well to the screen.

I agree. But that's the price we all have to pay for the sake of those who were unfortunate not to grow up and experience the cartoon in the 80's.

Exactly. I just hope more people will save the complaining and the whining till after they see the film. Who knows if the same thing happens to this movie as what happened with Spider-man (bashed to death before the release of the first movie then loved like hell after because it all turned out well despite the changes).
For me, this is my most anticipated movie of all...more than Spider-man 3, Pirates, or Shrek the third and im keeping my fingers crossed that they dont screw this one up.
