Those console guys have it easy. All this fuss about Playstation 3 being way too expensive, but have they ever had to spend almost a thousand dollars on just one piece of a new console? Seems like NVIDIA is just preying on the early adopters with this price point, but with Crysis and BioShock looming large we may all be upgrading soon.
Here's the press release from NVIDIA, and you can see more on the card here.
News Facts:
- Today NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA) introduced the world’s fastest graphics processing unit (GPU), the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra.
- The NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra performs an average of between 10 and 15% faster than the GeForce 8800 GTX GPU, previously considered the fastest GPU on the planet, across a wide range of top games and applications.
- NVIDIA nForce® 680i SLI-based motherboards for Intel processors provide the fastest and most feature-rich platform for the GeForce 8800 Ultra. NVIDIA refers to these systems as the “definitive gaming platform”.
- Consumers will be able to experience high-resolution, visually rich gaming and high-definition video playback with support for Blu-ray and HD DVD content.
- Definitive gaming platforms built with any nForce 600 Series motherboard are forward compatible with the new Intel processors with support for 1333FSB technology.
Product Facts:
- Graphics cards equipped with the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra GPU and 768MB of video memory will be available at e-tailers and retailers worldwide by May 15th. NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra graphics card launch partners include Asus, BFG, EVGA, Gainward, Galaxy, Gigabyte, Innovision, Leadtek, MSI, PNY, Point of View, Sparkle and XFX.
- Prices around €699 inc. tax [about $950 - Travis]
- GeForce 8 Series GPUs are the first shipping DirectX 10 GPUs and are the reference GPUs for Microsoft DirectX 10 API development.
- GeForce 8800 GPUs are the developer’s platform of choice for this year’s top DirectX 10 titles, including Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, Crysis, Age of Conan, Hellgate: London, Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts, World in Conflict, BioShock, PT Boats, and Cryostasis.
- Developers creating next-generation OpenGL titles, such as Enemy Territory: Quake Wars are also using GeForce 8 Series as their development platform of choice.
- GeForce 8 Series GPUs include all required hardware functionality defined in the Microsoft Direct3D® 10 specification, with full support for the DirectX 10 unified shader instruction set and Shader Model 4 capabilities.
- DirectX 10 is included with Microsoft Windows Vista and delivers unparalleled levels of graphics realism and film-quality effects for games, all rendered in real-time on a GeForce 8 Series DirectX 10-capable GPU.

These are overpriced and not worth it over the regular 8800GTX. I have two
8800GTX running 650GPU core, 2025 mem (1012), and 1500Mhz Shader wit Linkboost
enabled in my 680iSLI bios..., so I guess mine are Ultra Ultra models that are
like $300 cheaper/apiece.

LOL
I've never read such a subjective article like that
but don't forget
it's all about money...your money
so be fan be idiot
and one more thing,
lots of games come out with a logo that shouts in your face: "BUY THAT fuckin'
CARD AND THE GAME RUNS BETTER you faggot!"
marketing?! ;-)
cheers

Instead of just screeching e-leet speak like a disturbed 12 year old, just do
the Math.
8800 GTX - 600 dollars
8800 Ultra - 950 dollar
Company claims 10% - 15% increase in speed from GTX to ULTRA, but its a 58%
increase in price.
It's obviously not worth it but lets just hope this drives down the price of the
GT and GTX models.

anyone else feels killme is annoyed since he doesnt have the latest and greatest
anymore?
Anyway, a similar claim about idicrazy can be made about anyone buying a regular
8800 gtx since the gts and gts 320 provides better bang for the buck.

Guys,
Guru3d just made testing out of the card. they did get 10-15% increase in
performance. and the card price levels at around 699USD. Truly, this is just an
enthusiast card.

You'd have to be a big fool to spend a grand on a video card. Unless money
grows on trees in their backyard.

It would be a waste to spend $700 and still not have gddr4 memory

It would be great if nvidia, rather than releasing this somewhat pointless card,
listened to the people and made a 256-bit version of the 8600GT/GTS cards.

I'm getting one for my super sweet 16. Wait, I'm getting 2, right daddy? I need
the ultra cuz it's the best and I need 2 cuz that's the best * 2 which is like
double the best. I'll go pick the money off the tree in the backyard.

Here is another angle (marketing)...
ATI/AMD is about to release their HD line of new cards.
nVidia is hoping the 8800 Ultra will keep nVidia on top of the performance
charts, because ATI's R600 chip will beat the 8800 GTX. It is too late for
ATI/AMD to release new cards to adjust to the 8800 Ultra.
nVidia just wants to keep the "worlds fastest" title as long as possible.
We'll see.

hmm...
NVidia model comparison
rel="nofollow">http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce_8800.html
Core Clock 612 MHz
Memory Clock 1.08 GHz
Shader Clock 1.50 GHz
EVGA 8800 GTX KO ACS3
rel="nofollow">http://www.evga.com/products/pdf/768-P2-N837-AR.pdf
Core Clock 626 MHz
Memory Clock 1 GHz
Shader Clock 1.45 GHz
Difference:
Core Clock Ultra slower by 14 MHz - Variance: >-3%
Memory Clock Ultra faster by 80 MHz - Variance - >+8%
Shader Clock Ultra faster by 50 MHz - Variance - >+4%
I bet that the NVidia spec'd Ultra wouldn't perform but around 5% better than
the EVGA 8800 GTX KO ACS3 card. Given that the ACS3 KO card is an overclocked
GTX, but honestly, if you look at the amount of memory and pixel shaders of
each--the Ultra is just an overclocked GTX as well.
Is it worth the extra $300? Not to me.

hey gamers, can't u realize that most PC games are suck?maybe just one or two of 'em that can be say as GAME.many games only perform graphic quality but the gameplay itself is nothing..( it's better to say that u've buy junk applications that make u'r computer and ur wallet overheat).if it's just about the GPU's pride,i think its better for u to buy FX quardo 5600 and put it in u'r car's hood..
