Looks like Will Smith’s ability to generate box office gold hasn’t diminished at all. His new movie “I Am Legend” grossed nearly $77 million in the U.S. for its first weekend. In fact, “Legend” set a new record for December box office openings, beating the previous best set by “The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.”
And as if that wasn’t enough, “Legend” represents a new personal best for Smith, marking the highest opening weekend for the actor. That’s pretty remarkable when you consider the string of hits Smith has under his belt, from “Independence Day” and “Men in Black” to “Bad Boys” and “I, Robot.” Having reviewed the movie quite favorably for Tom’s Games and seen it twice in less than a week, I can see how this “I Am Legend” would be successful at the box office.
But the odd thing about this movie is that it’s not a traditional Will Smith vehicle. It’s an eerie, character-driven film that features a different kind of character than Smith is used to playing. Instead of being a charismatic, wise-cracking hero with gusto to boot, Smith plays Dr. Robert Neville as lonely, psychologically damaged survivor full of remorse. I can safely say that this is one of Smith’s best performances, and I’ve rarely seen this kind of powerful acting in an action/horror/science fiction movie.
As I stated in my review, fans of Richard Matheson’s novel I Am Legend will probably be disappointing that this movie isn’t a more faithful adaptation of the book (which has a great twist that’s entirely absent in the movie). Still, the direction by Francis Lawrence (“Constantine”) and the visual effects of a deserted New York City create a chilling atmosphere with plenty of suspenseful and even terrifying moments. And Smith is simply fantastic.

"Legend" is simply one of the best horror/sci-fi genre films ever. And you're right, this is one of Smith's best performances. I personally think it's his best performance ever.

I haven't seen this movie yet, but I find one of the most compelling characters Will Smith has played was in Six Degrees of Separation.

Hate to be the lone voice of discord here, but I thought the movie was 'OK'. It started off very strong, but then it became over-CG'd and I saw elements of 'the mummy' in there- with the roaring, large mouth monsters. Even transformed humans can't climb sheer walls (reminiscent of the mummy yet again). The ending was rushed as well. He did not have to do what he did (no spoiler) AT ALL. I figured they just didn't know how to end it so they defaulted on that old standby. They should have added another 20-30 minutes to the movie and did it right. They also could have made the monsters much more terrifying. Sure, they were super strong and made weird noises but largely they looked like gray people. Will smith had good range in this one, though.

Ah! lonevoice I couldn't disagree with you more!! The cure for cancer that turned deadly was one, if you will, that not only cured them of any and all diseases but increased the immune system to point of increasing stamina, strength (did u forget the scene where the alpha darkone was tossing Smith around in his teeth like a ragdoll), tolerence to pain and death. There temperature, respiration, etc was increased way pass normal levels that they became animated by comparison to everyone else.
The Mummy was not the first feature to have creatures crawling up walls, and if you use your reasoning then if you've seen one fantasy movie, or vampire movie or a movie with a skyscraper tall monster then you've seen them all.
The ending may have seem rushed to you ( I don't agree either) and I can't argue your perception, but he had to do what he did because if would have crawled in with the woman and child then the dark ones would have relentless bashed there way into there as well. So he took them out to buy time and give humanity a chance.
The needs of the many out way the needs of the few or the one!

i completely agree the ending did seem rushed and the cg was too much, still a good movie, but it could have been really epic if they took a bit more time with it.

I wish the monsters were closer to the ones in Firefly movie....
Movie was definitely good, better than any recent ones (I haven't seen them all so don't stone me if there was a better movie)
As Tom mentioned, CGI did look suspiciously similar to the Mummy monsters....
POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I still can't justify the ending, which probably could've been omitted and movie would have had the same (almost) impact. I wonder if the DVD version will have better alternate endings....
P.S. Frank is Judas:D

I don't know ... how can it be good if Will Smith doesn't act sassy and say "WELCOME TO EARF!!!" while punching an alien in the face?

Too many inconsistencies and plot holes for me. Thank you Tom I knew the night seekers reminded me of another cgi monster. Their eyes reminded me of I-robots androids. Just felt that was so much they could have done but I suppose that doesn't bring it the money. Maybe I'm just too hard to please.

"I Am Legend" where to begin and where to end, it seems I face the same problem the movie developers did I just hope I do a better job for the readers sake. To make it short Legend was a big flop for me. It seemed to me that the movie took good idea from other movies and made one really bad movie. The whole time I am watching the movie I knew it was just like some other movie then it hit me, I Am Legend is Castaway but with lots of Gollums on roids which do nothing but jump out to startle you. Which is pretty much the only thing the movie could do is startle you, because if they where not startling you then they simply lulled you to sleep with long boring periods of Will Smith doing boring stuff that we all do in real life but with real people. It almost seemed that they where trying to put you to sleep startle you awake. To end this rant you knew the movie was not going to be worth finishing when the dog died,

You're not the lone voice, Tom. I agree. The movie was a compilation of half-baked ideas.

I really enjoyed the different approach they applied to this genre. My only gripe would be with the physics used in dealing with the darkwalkers, even monkeys dont move that fluidly when scaling things and at certain points they seemed a bit too cartoonish. I liked the ending, because that tends to be how things go in real life. Everything seems to be fine and in the blink of an eye, it all goes to hell. Makes me want to go read the book.

I have to disagree. While I don't remember what the humans climbed I thought they were fine as they were not supposed to be your typical movie monster. I'm sure they could have made the monsters more terrifying but the movie really didn't seem to be about making them terrifying as it was about making them appear to still be human even if they looked different which was a basic idea from the novel.

Yeah I agree with the above poster, the ending was rather lacking, Will Smith was definatley top notch in this, he should win anstounding number of awards for his performance. The CG on the people were rather lacking and mummyish, this could of been a top notch best movie in a long time, but it feel short with a few short commings that wern't really that hard to fix. But all in all it was definatley still a good movie overall.

I enjoyed this movie until the end. Will Smith's acting was great and actually much better that I would have gave him credit for in a role like this. The end disappointed me greatly. I am a huge fan of the book. I am NOT one of those people who need everything exactly as the book tells it but come on. If you name the title of your movie after the book you had better at least keep the major plot lines intact.
The reason he is a Legend in the movie differs greatly from the book and the book would made for better cinema.

I saw the movie yesterday - was going to see it over the weekend but went to "No Country for Old Men" instead.
I should have seen Legend first... it was a decent enough movie but Old Men was a truly outstanding movie and Legend doesn't stand up well against that kind of competition. Of course it should be said that very few movies released this year would look good next to "No Country...", it's was a great piece of work.
Legend on the other hand was a decent horror/sci-fi flick, entertaining but a bit too much like someone asked the question "What if the '28 whatever later' series and the 'Castaway' movie had a baby?
And even in that genre I don't agree with an earlier poster that it's the 'best ever'... far from it. While there's not a LOT of quality work in that arena, movies like Aliens and Pitch Black are quality work, with more origonal content than Legend.
