So Spike TV’s 5th annual Video Game Awards show took place Friday night in Las Vegas and was televised two nights later. I had an opportunity to attend the show but the timing was bad and I couldn’t make it work. But truth be told, I was interested in seeing the VGA show live. I know it’s kind of tacky and overdone. I know the voting and winners can be a little suspect. And I was extremely curious to see what kind of crowd the VGA drew – where there real gamers or just pretty people that want to hobnob at a big event? – because when the presenters include “celebrities” from phony MTV reality shows, well, then you’re right to ask if the VGAs are for real gamers. But hey, gaming deserves its own award show, I suppose, and I give credit to Spike TV for pulling something together for five years running. And the 2007 VGAs sure were interesting. Read on for the winners:
I fully expected to see Halo 3 to take home the Game of the Year award (strangely, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare wasn’t even nominated in that category). Instead, BioShock won the big prize in what could be considered a mild upset. BioShock beat out Halo 3, the Orange Box, and Mass Effect.
Couple of issues here. First Call of Duty 4 isn’t even nominated. Second, the Orange Box is a package, not a game, technically speaking. And third, Mass Effect? I’m playing it right now, and it’s a good game, but I haven’t seen many reviews that would put it in the Game of the Year category. Granted, I haven’t finished Mass Effect, so what do I know?
Harmonix won the Studio of the Year award, thanks to its newest title Rock Band. I’d say that’s a decent choice (though MTV owns both Spike TV and Harmonix, so take that for what it's worth). Bungie was also nominated, as was Valve. Both are solid nominees as well. The real interesting one in this category was 2K Boston/2K Australia – I wonder how PC gamers would have reacted to them winning the VGA after the SecuROM DRM fiasco with BioShock’s launch.
The Best Shooter award went to Call of Duty 4, and I wholeheartedly applaud this one. Halo 3 was also nominated, as was BioShock and the Orange Box (but not Crysis?). Again, this is a mild upset considering the hype and acclaim around Halo 3.
Call of Duty 4 also won Best Military Game, beating out two Tom Clancy titles (Rainbow Six Vegas and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2) and World in Conflict, which seems out of place in this category since it’s an RTS (and a damned fine one, too).
The Best Action Game category was a strange one, too. Super Mario Galaxy won the award over God of War II, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, and Assassin’s Creed. Now the first two titles I can understand being nominated, but Assassin’s Creed? Check out my review for more details.
Ratchet & Clank also earned the Best PS3 Game Award, and it was well-deserved. BioShock grabbed the Best Xbox 360 title (and Best Original Score). The Orange Box won the Best PC Game award, which is fine because Team Fortress 2 rocks. Good choices all around.
Super Mario Galaxy won the Best Wii Game over Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Super Paper Mario (uh…what?) and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princes…which actually came out last year. What the hell?
Mass Effect earned the Best RPG prize, while the Simpsons Game earned the Best Movie/TV Adaptation award. Rock Band beat out Guitar Hero III for the Best Rhythm Game, and it also grabbed the Best Soundtrack Award. Tough to argue with those choices.
An odd little category known as Breakthrough Technology saw the award go to The Orange Box for Portal. Not sure how Portal uses breakthrough technology, but oh well. Rock Band, Crysis and Halo 3 (for saved films) were also nominated in this category. Still foggy on what it’s for.
Madden NFL 2008 won the Best Team Sports Game award and Skate won the Best Individual Sports Game award, while The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass won the Best Handheld Game award.
Halo may have been upset in a couple categories but the game did win the Best Multiplayer Game award as well as the Most Addictive Game award (over the Orange Box, which would have been my choice since I can’t put TF2 down).
Now about Crysis – it was kind of a disappointing show for the PC game. It won the Best Graphics award, and rightfully so. But the game got shut out of the Best Multiplayer category as well as the Game of the Year, Best PC Game and Best Shooter categories. That pretty much sums up how I feel about the game; it’s a solid title with great graphics that falls short of being world class.
As for the celebrity presenters, musical guests and host Samuel L. Jackson, well, I’m going to need some time to digest all of that drama.

I totally agree with the above statement and have a couple things to add. In my opinion the Spike TV VGA's are no more than a cheap video game award show with a serious sterotype about games and the people that play them. It's Hollywoods wish-wash think they know what the Hell a good video game is, put some movie star in to introduce so people think its cool. I mean come on most of these people didnt even play (what they think are great) games until the PS2 or X-Box were invented. Oh yeah, who the hell are the judges on these games? Twilight Princess....wtf! The ground breaking technology in portal uhh thats the Source engine at work, been here since 2004. I think that the VGA's are making a great industry look bad. They dont even look into worthy games. One more rant BioShock is a cool game but it was too easy and to short with no multiplayer. Cant touch Crysis or COD4. The Spike TV VGA's is showing it's MTV heritage, by becoming pop culture crap. Thanks MTV you're ruining another great thing again! Cancel the VGA's or let somebody who knows what the hell is going on in the gaming world run it. G4 for instance.

"Rock Band beat out Guitar Hero III for the Best Rhythm Game, and it also grabbed the Best Soundtrack Award. Tough to argue with those choices."
Umm, I have no problem with Rock Band -- EXCEPT its soundtrack. Its terrible in comparison to Guitar Hero 3 (or 2 for that matter).
Then again, since MTV is under the same ownership as Spike TV, I am not at all shocked that the MTV-branded inferior-soundtracked "Rock Band" would get a win here.
Lame.

i don't find it surprising halo 3 did not win many award it the most hyped up game out there. 'if there was a award for hype then halo franchise would win hand down. otherwise halo will always be a over rated product that microsoft will bank on to save there ship from sinking. i'll agree that cod4 should have been nominated for game of the year and i believe i should have taken home that honor. for all you halo fan for first month or 2 that all you seen online was poeple playing halo 3 and now everyone playing cod4 admiting halo 3 was a bad purchase. never played rock band but guitar hero 3 does rock. I realy enjoyed there soundtrack.

All I know is the way the winners were presented was cool. Body painting should be standard award presenting material.

Well for one thing Halo3 was to much like halo2. To give them the top award. And to short. BioShock was so much more then halo3 in game play and graphics.

Watch the portal commentary and it will give you a glimpse into why it won the award. Saved films feature in Halo3 isn't new or breakthrough, it is done well though.
To me COD4 isn't really a full game, Bioshock deserves the game of the year award more than it. It is probably the most polished shooter to date, but while intense I feel the single player was much too short. On the other hand Bioshock has a good storyline, rpg elements, and shooter elements as well as a compelling singleplayer mode. All around I think Bioshock was the better game, but shooter? Definitely COD4.
I would have chosen either COD4 or TF2 as the best multiplayer game over Halo3. Both are extremely addicting, with TF2 being outrageously fun because of the atmosphere thanks to the Valve team, and COD4 with great action, graphics, and customizable classes.

I'm embarrassed that awards show even exists. I wouldn't even waste my time watching it, so I can only imagine how bad it would be to sit through it. It's like the Academy Awards with D-list celebrities who have little to no association with games. I don't know how they manage to snag Samuel L. Jackson. He either loves games, gets paid a lot, or just really comes through with the favors. Game award shows will continue to have no credibility for as long as they try to make it hip and cater to the teen demographic. An award show is pretty much the only place for game makers to get the limelight when instead we get reality show rejects.
So far the best award show I've ever seen was G-Phoria 2007 because a) it featured the X-Play hosts breezing through all of the categories with no audience and b) they made fun of the award shows of years past. They definitely made the right choice making G-Phoria 2007 low-key and handing it over to X-Play. Still, a lot needs to be done for video game award shows to have any kind of integrity.

No COD4 nomination for best game?!?! That's crazy. IMO it was by far the best game this year. And the multiplayer is even better than the single player. Halo 3 was fun, but the multiplayer isn't that great (probably because its console only). As for the best studio award, blatant self promotion, but I'd expect nothing less from MTV.

I agree with many of their choices... imo better than most of the MTV and VH1 "Top 100 whatever of all time" lists - which are usually horrible.
Portal really wasn't new tech... but rather a fairly significant expansion in the concept of a first person game. Lots of FPS's have had puzzle aspects - but Portal revolutionizes that idea and proves that fps puzzles can BE the game, not just be a part of a game.
I expect we'll see portal apsects in the next HL release, and that could result in HL being even more amazing than it already is.

I liked the world premier aspect of the video game awards. Showing the next "Big" titles that are up and coming. Except for Little Big GAY Planet. But you really have to give it to the cameramen for airming the camera right on the hot chicks camel toe presenting the winner of the category. All Hail body painting!!

Hands down COD4 should have been game of the year. It may be short on regular. try it on Veteran and that will give you double to triple or even quadruple the time it took to pass it on regular. So overall even if it was short, its much longer if you try it on veteran. And i'm quite sad that crysis didn't make that list either. And as for Halo3, well its a great game, and its multiplayer/Co-op abilities are quite fun and take the game a step further then what COD4 offers. All in all i think the VGA's should die, and a voting system should be implemented. Kind of like dialing a number that'd be cool, that way its not just random BS.. Ehh at least in general from a gamers perspective we all know what games deserve what.

In response to the first comment by Casey: Are you kidding? G4 is more childish than MTV could ever hope to be.
As far as everything else, meh. A lot of video games are over-rated and were simply nominated because they got a lot of hype. I do agree with the soundtrack to Rock Band being better than Guitar Hero 3. There are only a few songs from GH3 that I'd like to see in Rock Band but a lot of songs in Rock Band I'd like to see in GH3.

Ok, I think everyone is getting sick of these awards shows for the nepotism. How's this for a suggestion, lets set up an online voting on "tomsgames" and let us pick the winners for the catagories, and allow write-ins. If the write-ins starts beating the losing nominated game it replaces it on the ballot.
Awards shows... where people who don't have a clue, listen to buzz and write up a ballot.
Oh and since I need to put in my 2cents... TF2 should have swept, and where is the WII in all this for inovation! Another example of Valve employees actually being aliens and taking over the world! Kudos.
